Poll Inspired Question

I know I just posted a couple of hours ago (and please comment on that one with your ideas and suggestions) but this is something I would really like to hear form all of you on.

Is the United States showing it is a racist country if Sen. Obama does not win?

With differing responses to this poll question I think further explanation might be beneficial to both sides of this topic. Therefore, please explain why you think Sen. Obama's loss would or would not prove America is a racist country.

Dude, I'm not not voting for him because he's BLACK. I'm not voting for him because he FREAKS THE CRAP OUT OF ME.

I think it's phenomenal that no matter what happens, we'll have a minority in the White House. If we say he doesn't win because the US is racist... then we've got bigger problems.

Brittany said...

Why do you feel that way?

Emily said...

Because if people think that he didn't win only because he's BLACK, then we're not suffering not from racism, but from ignorance... and THAT is my biggest fear of all.

Brittany said...

Is this accurate then? If he loses we are racist. So if he wins did he win only because he was black?

Brittany said...

Wait, if McCain loses are we, as a country, ageist? or Sexist?

Brittany said...

Who's to say I'm not voting against his "white half"? No disrespect intended but he is no more black than he is white except by visual appearance.

Emily said...

NO, that's not right AT ALL. I'm saying that if people don't vote for him, perhaps they're not voting because HE sucks--not because of the color of his skin.

Sigh. Am I not clear? lol

I know that's not what YOU meant but I'm trying to simplify that (if he loses we are racist) line of thought and then flip it to the opposite. I hope that made sense.

Emily said...

but that's not the line of thought at all!

the line of thought is...

if he loses and people think it's because we're racist, then people are stupid!

ok...I'll try it again.

haha - OK, that was directed at me, wasn't it? hehhee

Ummm... flashback to the 80s??

Stupid? Are you trying to keep any/all those who might disagree with you flee from reading and commenting on my blog?!

Wow tell us how you really feel Em. Perhaps, you meant "misguided" or...

Ok, I have to admit I don't understand why anyone would legitimately agree with that line of thinking (Obama loss = America is racist). That is exactly why I hope someone who does would help me understand that type of conclusion. And I honestly do want to understand this. That's why I asked. Although I had NO idea you had such a strong opinion!

Sigh... Read the first few posts. You kept changing what I said so i had to put it in the simplest words possible!!!!! I give up.

Brittany said...

YOU STARTED WITH:

"he FREAKS THE CRAP OUT OF ME"

That's pretty simple if you ask me.

Emily said...

BUT IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brittany said...

I KNOW! BREATHE!!

Are you ok now?!

Emily said...

I love you. but you frustrate me.

I don't think Obama will lose only because we're racist, or McCain will lose because we're Agist, or Sexist if you throw Palin into the mix. I think no matter who wins, we're still racist, agist and sexist in many ways. It's one of many factors, but I don't think it will be causal for why one candidate wins or loses--too many other factors. Even if Obama wins, there's still a lot of racism out there, or in the McCain case, agists, etc. You get my drift. It's too narrow to attribute that to one of those discriminatory practices.

I agree with the comments on here so far. lesley, you're right. no matter who wins or loses, all of those 'isms' are still found in our country in various forms. But no, I don't think that if Obama loses, it'll be because he's black.

One Last Thought From Me

Why not remember this act of love and sacrifice daily rather than just at Easter? Yes, this event is an indescribably joyous one because Jesus did rise from the dead but we should never forget how and why He suffered unimaginably before defeating Death and Hell itself on our behalf. He did so while thinking of you and me. In doing so he personally took on our sin, our pain and a debt we could not pay in order to provide a way to complete forgiveness and redemption. The truth is, either way death is not the end and being a “good person” isn’t a substitution for being truly forgiven.

God tells us that by simply believing Jesus rose from the dead, confessing and turning away from our sin and making the Bible the true foundation of our life, we will be forgiven for our sins and live eternally in Heaven.

As you may know, I am far from perfect and if you have doubts about that I’m sure you can find a multitude of people who can confirm that. I have made countless mistakes and bad judgments and will again in the future despite my best intentions. It is because of this that I am exceedingly thankful I can go directly to God and ask for help, ask for forgiveness and know that God's mercy is new every morning as I continually work to keep my foundation on God's Word. Truly accepting God's love, mercy and a true freedom offered in a life firmly anchored in His Word is something there simply aren't words to describe.

I have to admit that I regularly take that for granted and listening to the words in a song like “Via Dolorosa” is one way to help remind me of the sacrifice Jesus made on that cross. Deciding to live for Christ was without a doubt the best decision I made in my life. Don’t get me wrong, it didn’t solve all my problems and make my life perfect. But I have a peace and hope only God can offer and I know in God’s eyes He sees a child forgiven rather than condemned. Now that I am a parent I can’t even begin to imagine what it must be like for God to watch His children exercise their free will when they chose to reject Him rather than embrace the salvation He offers each of us.

Regardless of your feelings on God and Jesus I hope you enjoy the power of the images and music I posted. And thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts about what can be a very sensitive issue.

Via Dolorosa (Latin for Sorrowful Road)
